In the quiet French provincial town of Niort, on Quai de Cronstadt, is a small bar called Erick’s Café. During the day it stands empty, but on the weekends at night the room becomes cramped and loud with a lively young crowd who spill out onto the street.
These photos are part of an artist in residence I attended organised by Pour l’instant. Working with a small hand-held flash and shot on location in the bar I was able to capture singular brief encounters with people who generously revealed to me a mixture of vulnerability, self-knowing, swagger andwithdrawal.
